This year Sun ‘n Fun is putting a lot of emphasis into one of the areas that deserves attention, Paradise City. Look for the area to have a new look, including a new layout, an included LSA Mall, an included Choppertown, and lots more vendors! Also this year, there has been an effort to gather ...
The new LODA order is out. Yay. This is the order that allows local FSDO's to write letters of deviation authority for flight instructors to provide flight instruction in experimental aircraft. There are some good things in the order, especially for gyroplanes. It is very close to the document that sport pilot CFI's needed in 2009. Unfortunately it is now 2011. David Oord talks about the order, what is good in it and how instructors can apply for a LODA so that they can get instructing again.
The midwinter summit between the FAA and the EAA is a major event that is only open to the executives of the two organizations. It's a time for the organizations to address important flying community issues. David Oord joins us to talk about some of the ongoing issues for the sport flying community that have needed to be addressed and why this forum is one of the most important ones for citizen aviators.
One of the meetings that Jim Sweeney attended while in Sebring was hosted by the FAA and its purpose was to achieve one of the FAA Administrator's goals, the reduction of fatalities in amateur-built aircraft. Several ideas were discussed including getting aviation organizations and insurance companies more involved. However, preventing fatalities was an area where a better LODA procedure could be instrumental for all sorts of experimental aircraft.
Finally a flight instructor has a LODA (Letter of Deviation Authority) so that he can provide flight training in an Experimental Light Sport Aircraft (E-LSA) Powered Parachute. We talk with Stephen Brandon who flies and trains in Northern California about how he worked with the Oakland FSDO so that he could continue flying and training.
Are you a pilot whose patience is running out waiting for the FAA to issue a Letter of Deviation Authority (LODA) so you can resume giving instruction in your experimental light-sport aircraft? If you’re one of the hundreds of E-LSA owners who had a training deviation prior to January 31, 2010, but are now considering ...
Following is an interview with the FAA Administrator, Randy Babbitt, published in the Washington Post. Being a pilot himself, he probably has aviation safety in mind more than most. In fact, this pull quote from the end of the article is excellent:
When I began flying, I had no idea how sensitive the sport would be to political wrangling. At the time it was all pretty simple. You get an ultralight aircraft, you get a little training (the smart guys did that in reverse order!) and then you have fun. Straight forward. My first taste of politics ...
